about

Who We Are

College Student’s C.A.R.E.S. (Cancer Awareness and Raising Emotions through Sports) is a newly established University of Florida organization dedicated to making an impact in the cancer community through a dynamic approach. You will be among others who have been affected by cancer through personal diagnosis, through family diagnosis, or through sheer interest in cancer, now the number one killer in America.

What We Do

College Student’s C.A.R.E.S is a revolutionary organization that brings together college students from Gainesville and the Southeast to spread knowledge, raise funds, and volunteer throughout the community. The principles of sports are a way of life. It expresses challenge, determination, unity, and most importantly, hope. Our organization is based on these ideals.

How We Will Change the World

College Students’ C.A.R.E.S. will volunteer with those affected by cancer and will address the needs of other aspects of the community. We volunteer at the ACS Hope Lodge, Shand’s Pediatric Specialty Clinic, and we are currently looking for organizations that need our help. We will also participate in UF Intramural sports and would like to initiate a sports program that will encompass cancer survivors and patients.

Our main event will be in mid-February in which college students will come from campuses across Florida to increase their cancer awareness and celebrate money raised for the Keira Grace Foundation and Climb For Cancer (www.cfc-foundation.org/). Furthermore, one of our fellow members and cancer survivor will be attempting to climb a mountain next summer in a heroic effort to raise money for Climb For Cancer. There are spots open for others to climb along with him.

The sports tournaments include a 3-K run, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, a dance competition, and a poker tournament. We will hold a conference aided by speakers in order to inform our participants on the latest on cancer and how to spread information on cancer in their communities. Furthermore, a dozen booths will present further vital information.

How You May Get Involved

Members are expected to attend 4 meetings, 2 community service events, 2 social events, 2 financial events, and actively participate in our sports activities each semester.

Positions presently available include Historian and Sports Chair. These positions will be filled in September. All positions are a one year commitment.
